The High Grass bookshelf is a living organism that interacts with the objects it stores. Unlike conventional bookshelves, no two shelves in High Grass are alike. Each shelf has its own unique shape, creating a diverse and imaginative storage solution. When filled with books, music, and personal items, the bookshelf transforms into a swaying, almost dancing, sculpture.
The construction of the High Grass bookshelf is self-supporting and made of plywood. Vertical plates are inserted into a base, creating a sturdy framework. The shelves are mounted between the vertical plates using a pivot and screw mechanism. This design allows for easy assembly and disassembly, requiring only two screwdrivers.
With dimensions of 196 cm in width, 250 cm in height, and 32 cm in depth, the High Grass bookshelf offers ample storage space. It is available in five different versions, including wood (beech), green, red, blue, and black, allowing for customization to suit any interior.
High Grass encourages creative interaction and experimentation. Filling the bookshelf is not just about organizing books, but also about co-creating a sculpture. The diverse shapes and sizes of the shelves accommodate various formats of books and odd-sized items, inspiring unique arrangements and displays.
The High Grass bookshelf project began in spring 2013 in Denmark, in collaboration with the design company Bjast. The first prototype was realized in the Czech Republic in autumn 2013. Overcoming challenges such as achieving the bend shape of the vertical plates and creating a structure that can be easily assembled and disassembled, the final design showcases the versatility and strength of plywood.
The innovative design of the High Grass bookshelf has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. By breaking away from traditional bookshelf designs, High Grass offers a fresh perspective on storage and brings a touch of nature's beauty into our living spaces.
